Employee Rights in Dubai, UAE

 In Dubai, there are millions of employees working in Dubai and the UAE. Foreign Employees must be employed by someone in the UAE. What happens when the employment contract is terminated and most of the employees don't know about their rights in the UAE.  

In general, all the expatriates who are looking to work in UAE must be employed by an approved company and issue a work permit for entrance in the country Also called an employment contract.

A contract is signed by both employer and employees which explains the terms and conditions.

Here in this article, we will look into the basic rights of employees that are provided by the UAE labor code.


 UAE is a major economic country and it protects the interests of the employees working in UAE. 

If you are an expatriate and working in UAE it is very important to know about the basic rights given by the UAE labor law code to employees and to avoid any kind of inconvenience if there is a conflict between employer and employees.


The employee has seven rights as provided for by the Dubai Labor code which the employer has to take into consideration upon the termination of the contract of employment. Hence, the employee upon terminating his/her contract of employment has the following rights:

  • Right to receive all unpaid salaries
  • To be paid charges for extra hours of work
  • Get compensation for unfair dismissal
  • Get an air ticket
  • Get gratuity
  • Notice period salary
  • And have annual leave

We will elaborate on each point in more detail to understand the basic rights of employees in the UAE.

It is the right of the employee to get all the unpaid salaries at the termination of the contract. The employer is bound to pay all the unpaid dues to the employees.

The employer must pay employees for the extra hours of work. Payment for extra hours of work as agreed in the employment contract.


If the employer terminates the contract while breaching one or more clauses in the employment contract employee must be compensated for the illegal dismissal.

It is the right of an employee to receive the gratuity for the working period and it will be calculated as per UAE labour laws


Employees must have annual leave and he can go for an annual leave by informing the employer before going for annual leave.
